Fall protection uses a combination of ropes, D rings, lanyards, webbing, and safety harnesses. If the fall distance is less than 18 1/2 feet, always use a self-retracting lifeline. If the fall distance is greater than 18 1/2 feet, a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline may be used. OSHA determines that:
- Employees are required to wear personal fall safety protection above 6 feet.
- The fall protection anchor points must be able to support 5,000 lbs per employee.
- The safety harness should fit snuggly for full range of movement.
- After a fall, a shock-absorbing lanyard that has been deployed must be taken out of service.
- A person must be brought to a complete stop and limit maximum deceleration to 3 1/2 feet.
- Employees must not attach fall arrest systems to guard rails or hoists.
